WINDHAM GARDEN CLUB

MINUTES OF REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING

September 18, 2008

 

I.      WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm at the Windham Town Hall by President Jill Martin

The Officers present were

               President          Jill Martin

               1st  Vice-Pres     Denise Sarnie - Programs

               2nd Vice-Pres     Julia Salafia - Yearbook + Website

                                       Rhonda Peckham - Membership

               Secretary          Su Bennett

 The Officer excused was Treasurer, Jean Manthorne

 The following people were welcomed:

- new member, Kathy Alosso      

 

II.    PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

 III.   EXECUTIVE BOARD REPORTS

 1st VICE PRESIDENT-PROGRAMS:

   Bulb Program- order from John Scheepers, Inc in Connecticut - catalogs available from Denise

   Upcoming Programs-

Oct Mtg – Tea Tasting, Origins + History of Tea

Nov Craft – decorate 2 large hanging artificial pine cones, $30, sign up sheet on table

 

2ND VICE PRESIDENT- YEARBOOK + WEBSITE:

   The Yearbook is planned to be distributed at the October Meeting.

2ND VICE PRESIDENT - MEMBERSHIP:

   The new Membership form is now on line

TREASURER:  Financial Statements posted

SECRETARY:  Prior meeting Minutes posted on the WGC website + on the bulletin board

PRESIDENT:

   NHFGC Semi-Annual Mtg – Bert Ford, Ford Florist in Salem will be the speaker

   Fall digs are starting, sign up sheets on the table

   many jobs to do- dig, label, inventory the plants, etc, etc

   if you have plants in your garden, the group can dig them + then pot them at Shirlee’s

            Anniversary List is posted – 8 people have been members for 16 years – Congrats !!

            Penny Pines Project – promoted by NGC (National Garden Clubs, Inc)

               Each $68 contribution allows reforesting of one acre by the Forest Service

   This is for areas damaged by fire or other natural catastrophe

               Donations can be designated for NH, especially the areas destroyed by the July tornado

               Diane McMillen is collecting for NH – Box 1030, Atkinson, NH 03811 (also on form)

 

IV.   MOTIONS

MOTION: To add Kathy + Jim McMahon of Tiffany Gardens as Honorary Members

MOVED:  Linda German

            SECONDED: Shirlee Dallas, Carolyn Hanson, Margaret Crisler (couldn’t determine who was 1st!)

                        IN FAVOR: All

                        OPPOSED: None

                                    CARRIED

 

V.    OPEN TO THE FLOOR

STANDING COMMITTEES:

JR GARDEN CLUB – Bea Heinze + Julia Salafia

- Held some meetings this summer

-  planted bulbs at Pine Hill, toured Bea’s Fairy Garden + enjoyed a boat ride

            - Upcoming meetings are on the website

 SPECIAL COMMITTEES/EVENTS:

ANNUAL AWARDS PRESENTED AT SUMMER SOLSTICE -

- Belatedly presented to Joan Szoke- past President + committee Chair

        for her long-standing dependability + manning the Plant Sale vegetable table with her husband

 FUND RAISER – Linda German

- Annual Innisbrook Gift Wrap, Chocolates + Gifts

- Oct Mtg- place + pay for orders, Nov Mtg- receive merchandise

  NHFGC “PLANT NATIVES for BIRDS + BUTTERFLIES” PROJECT – Bea Heinze, Chairperson

- Our Bird is the Wood Thrush and our Butterfly is the Red Spotted Purple

- Activities completed  for the project

    - invasives removed at member Su Bennett’s – Burning Bushes + Oriental Bittersweet

       - native plant for bird:  thicket of native pussy willows for nesting site at Irene Blenis Discovery Trail

       - native plant for butterfly: a pair of  Wild Black Cherry trees for egg laying, caterpillar food source,  
        hibernaculum building leaves, + fruit  blossoms + fruit for the adult at Windham Rail Trail

- Jr Gardeners were featured in the NHFGC Autumn Lilac Letter

- removed invasive Burning Bush and

- planted improved native North Sky Low Bush Blueberry in member Bea Heinze garden
     The Wood Thrush eats the ripe blueberry + the red Spotted Purple likes the over-ripe berry

      - WGC PowerPoint presentation was the first one turned in for the State of NH!

OTHER COMMUNITY EVENTS –

      - Sep 27 – Shepherd’s Pantry Yard Sale – Deb Harvey

                  Deb has Raffle Tickets + any donations can be brought to the office Fri Sep 26

      - October 4 – Women’s Club Coat Drive

      - Nov 28-Dec 30 – Holly Days, Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Boylston,  MA

                  - Exhibitor Reservation form is due by Nov 1 – Jill has copies

VI.   BREAK and REFRESHMENTS - HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE

THIS MONTH’S THEME – Fall flowers- bugbane, yellow wax bells and spent obedient plant
