WINDHAM GARDEN CLUB

MINUTES OF REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING

March 20, 2008 – the Vernal Equinox

 

I.      WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 pm at the Windham Town Hall by President Jill Martin

The Officers present were

               President          Jill Martin

               2nd Vice-Pres     Julia Salafia - Yearbook + Website

                                           Rhonda Peckham - Membership

                Treasurer           Jean Manthorne

               Secretary          Su Bennett

 The Officer excused was Denise Sarnie, 1st Vice-President - Programs

         The following people were welcomed:

- guests of WGC member Ray Loszewski, this month’s speaker –

Ray’s sister, Alice + her husband, Dick, the lucky owners of Alice’s Pond, and Ray’s mother, Donna                    

   - Al Sette, Dave Settino, and Gary Bennett

III.   EXECUTIVE BOARD REPORTS

 

1st VICE PRESIDENT-PROGRAMS: from Denise via Jill

- Denise + Sam D. went to the NE Flower Show on the bus trip arranged by the Derry Garden Club

- Members from other Garden clubs also went + they all had a very good time

- Highly recommend the bus trip next year

            - Thurs, Mar 27 at 7pm at the Londonderry Library – Elizabeth Brink, Master Gardener will speak

                     - Topic is Container Gardens

2ND VICE PRESIDENT- YEARBOOK + WEBSITE:

   - Pictures from the Summer Solstice Meeting and the Jr Garden Club are now on the website

2ND VICE PRESIDENT - MEMBERSHIP:

   - New members names sent out by email

TREASURER:  Financial Statements posted

SECRETARY:  Prior meeting Minutes posted on the WGC website + on the bulletin board

PRESIDENT:

- Good Luck to Margaret Crisler, member + Master Gardener, who will be retiring as Selectman

            and running for State Representative

- NHFGC 75th Annual Meeting – Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Celebration, May 28 in Jaffrey, NH

             Sign up forms will be in the Lilac letter + on the NHFGC website

- NHFGC Semi-Annual Meeting – Sept 24 at C R Sparks, Bedford, NH

            We are creating the Centerpieces, sign up with Jill if you are interested in helping

- Check the Bulletin board at half-time many upcoming local events are posted

- Purchase of tables to use at Plant Sale

            - Last year $620 was spent to rent tables

- Josie found 6-ft folding tables made of polyethylene at Sam’s Club for $43.86 each

- Jill is verifying that they can be stored in the Town Hall, so can be used by the town, also

- MOTION: To purchase 40 tables for a total of $1,754.40 – Shirlee Dallas

            - SECONDED: Linda German + many others

                        = APPROVED =

 

- Many catalogues + magazines on the side table, please take some home + enjoy!

          

IV.   OPEN TO THE FLOOR

STANDING COMMITTEES:

 HORTICULTURE COMMITTEE – Josie Cappiello + Jill Martin

      - Container Workshop – Sun, June 1 at 1:30 pm at Josie’s– sign up with Shirlee, $15

JR GARDEN CLUB – Julia Salafia

- Will meet every 2 months, schedule + programs will be on the website

- This month they rooted plants in gel + some of the corn + veggies have sprouted

PLANT SALE COMMITTEE –

            -  Sign up sheet with Jill if you need any plants in your yard divided

- If you need soil or plant pots, please see Shirlee  

            -  Fri, April 4 + Sat, Apr 5 – potting up at Shirlee’s – come one, come all !!!

            - Sign up for pre-sale perennials with Shirlee at this meeting and also the April meeting

-  RAFFLE- Linda German

- Need more donations for prizes + also contributions to the Grand Prize Bonanza

 

POT RECYCLE DAY –

- June 14 at the Transfer Station

 

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE – Grace Marad (via Jill)

-  Applications have been sent out, just waiting for responses

    

SPECIAL COMMITTEES/EVENTS:

 

ART in BLOOM -

-  Denise received the picture of the sculpture from the MFA + she will have it posted on our website

ARTHUR BAKER COMMUNITY INVESTMENT GRANT – Linda German

      - Deadline of April 1 has been published in various local papers

 CLUB HISTORY – Sam Dubreuil

- Meetings at Sam’s home, all are welcome

         DAFFODIL DAYS – Joanne Ago

      - This is the 14th year WGC has spearheaded this for Windham + the American Cancer Society

            - Have raised over $63k between selling + delivering to local businesses + selling to public on Sat am

            - Space still avail to sign up to help sell on Sat, Mar 22

            - New this year – blooming daffodils already planted in a pot

 

CURRIER MUSEUM in MANCHESTER – Josie Cappiello

- Grand Re-Opening – free admission Mar 30-Apr 5

 

PETALS 2 PAINT – Robin Heider + Cookie Santerre

      - Sat Apr 19 + Sun, Apr 20 at Eat Colony Art in Manchester

V.    BREAK and REFRESHMENTS - HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE

THIS MONTH’S THEME – St Patrick’s Day

     Many thanks to Cheri Maw, Joanne Parent, and Tracy Poteat for the delicious + nutritious goodies

 Our own Ray Loszewski showed us beautiful slides on how he designed and built Alice’s Pond
