WINDHAM GARDEN CLUB MINUTES OF REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING JUNE 19, 2008 I. WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS The SUMMER SOLSTICE GOURMET POTLUCK DINNER MEETING was called to order at 6:45 pm at the Searles Chapel by President Jill Martin The Officers present were President Jill Martin 1st Vice-Pres Denise Sarnie - Programs 2 nd Vice-Pres Julia Salafia - Yearbook + Website Rhonda Peckham - Membership Secretary Su Bennett The Officer excused was Treasurer, Jean Manthorne Scholarship recipients, family + close friends of members were warmly welcomed. II. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE III. ANNOUNCEMENTS - NHFGC AWARDS: WGC Club History + Scrapbook both received Honorable Mention - Application for 2008-9 membership form is being re-vamped and available at the September Mtg - WGC Annual Plant Sale grossed a total of approx $ 9k - $ 7k in plants + $1.3k from the Raffle - NHFGC Birds + Bees Project – Bea Heinze - Has a proposed site chosen which needs to approved by the town - Will be digging up invasives on Saturday at Su Bennett’s as part of the project - Jr Garden Club Meeting at Bea’s home on July 10 at 5:30 – project: building a Fairy House
IV. PRESENTATION OF ANNUAL AWARDS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR - Pam Friend – for outstanding contributions by a first year member CERTIFICATES OF APPRECIATION from a “WORKING” CLUB - Rhonda Peckham – for many years of doing the Yearbook + Membership - Ruth Bellizzi – for active participation on many committees - Joan Szoke – past President + Committee Chair - for Plant Sale dependability along with her husband - Grace Marad – for many years of chairing the Scholarship Committee - Bea Heinze – for just being everywhere, Civic Committee, Club History, the State Project, etc, etc NH FEDERATION of GARDEN CLUB’S SILVER SEAL AWARD Shirlee Dallas - for many, many years of volunteering + service She is always willing to share her life + her love of flowers, you never leave her house without a plant in your hand! GOLDEN TROWEL Josie Cappiello - for many outstanding achievements + service to the club JUNIOR GOLDEN TROWEL – a new Award this year Cassandra Salafia - for her commitment, leadership, + volunteerism in the Jr Gardener Program She wants to learn everything + does. She always says “Oh, I can do that.” Shirlee took her under her wing as an apprentice and is teaching her everything!
TWO NANCY SURETTE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS OF $2,000 EACH - Presented by Grace Marad, Committee Chair
ALYSSA WHEELER Alyssa will study environmental engineering at Cornell University. She maintained a near-perfect rating in all her Honors + Advanced Placement courses. Donating more than one thousand hours to community service during high school, she received a President’s Volunteer Award from the White House for activities ranging from a Darfur fundraiser and Toys for Tots to worldwide appearances with the Red Star Twirlers. Her engineering interests were enhanced by a 16-week BAE Systems Women in Technology internship and a Cornell University CURIE Academy summer engineering program honoring just 15 young women worldwide. Congratulations !
BRITTANY YOST Brittany has chosen St Anselm College and its Biology program as a precursor to attending medical school. Also a top student in Honors + Advanced Placement studies, she is a member of the National Technical Honor Society and Health Occupations Students of America, which awarded her first place in its New England terminology competition in March. She attended the National Youth Leadership Forum for Medicine, a ten-day conference for future medical students, in July 2007. A state finalist for the Miss NH Teen USA Pageant in 2007, Ms Yost was a member of the Salem High Marching Band for 4 years, including performances at the Fiesta Bowl and Citrus Bowl, and itsJazz Band. Congratulations !
V. GOURMET POT LUCK DISHES PREPARED BY ALL THE MEMBERS Tasty appetizers, delectable entrees, and yummy desserts were enjoyed by all.
